Gear shift won't come out of park S60 2005

2005 Volvo t5 was operating perfectly. Parked it day before yesterday. Yesterday, started engine, let engine warm, cleared windshields and gear shift would not move from Park.

When press on the brake, you can feel a "thunk" in the shifter button release, but shifter will not move.

Please help. We are stuck 100 miles from nearest dealership and cannot afford to have it towed. Husband is great mechanic on domestic cars, but has never seen this problem.

Won't a brake light switch do this? You should rule this out first. Get something to brace the pedal or a helper to press the pedal and check. Do the brake lights work?

From what I can tell, the shifter knob assy. is a likely culprit. See if the button is sticking out at the bottom. From the side, it looks unnatural when broken, sticking out a little like a bird beak or a sickle.

You might try hitting the top of the shifter with the side of you fist to push it down a millimeter. It takes a bit to remove the center console exposing the shift solenoid.
