Need advice. "Transmission Service Required' message and no go. V70-XC70 2008

We've put about 2,500 miles on the '08 V70 we bought before Christmas. It's at 65,000 now. It's run perfectly with only an occasional no-start event when pushing the button.

This morning my wife gets in the car, it starts fine and stops at the end of the driveway. She said all the dash lights came on. I tried to start it and got what in a car with a key would sound like a low battery. Relays chattering, dash lights flickering, even the start button was vibrating.

After I got everyone where they needed to go I came back ready to jump the battery but tried it first. Started right up. When I put it in drive to pull back into the driveway it seemed like it was trying to go forwards and backwards at once. The trans seemed locked. Same thing for reverse. Even in neutral it was hung in some drive mode. There's a message on the dash "Transmission Service Required."

Sound familiar? I need to move it into the driveway so will see if it will roll in N with the engine off.

I haven't bought the Vida Dice yet but would it bring updates? I've read a bit about firmware upgrades on the web but I don't know when the trans control unit was last upgraded.

I just got rid of our 850 after it's trans failed.

Let the games begin.

Erwin

I think you need a subscription in order to do software updates with Vida Dice, but it definitely would help with diagnostics. If it were me, I think I'd give the local indy a call to see whether he has encountered this in the past.

    Good luck!

I will be buying the Dice unit asap. In the meantime, leaving the battery disconnected for 20 minutes cleared any problems and the car drives just fine. I know it might recur but hopefully I'll have the Dice and some familiarization time under my belt first.

      Thanks,

      Erwin

        Follow up.

The car started and ran fine from the time I posted this until today when again it failed to start, this time about 3 miles from home. My trusty Fluke meter showed the Volvo battery at 10 V so off to AutoZone. $200 later I had a replacement and changed it out. Instant start.

I hope that's the end of that. The Volvo battery I removed was dated 12/11.

The AZ Duralast is a longer battery and fills the compartment, whereas the dead Volvo was about two inches shorter in length.

        Cheers,

        Erwin
