Treated myself to new Volvo Antenna , over $200 . At first got no FM reception 850 1995

I tried putzing with the old antenna, took it apart, cleaned up grease, but it wouldn't go up all the way. Poor reception (i.e few stations) and haven't even bothered to turn on the radio. I installed the new antenna and no FM reception, seek would just buzz up the bandwidth. Yesterday after driving 40 minutes to JFK airport I though that being in NYC maybe I could pick up a station. To my surprise i got a zillion FM stations and that continued all the way home, 30 miles north. I put the antenna up and down by radio shutoff and it worked great in my driveway. This morning - back to nothing. It seems like it could be the radio (OEM 1995) as I haven't used it so am not familiar with its condition. Still I read something about bad diodes in an antenna means AM only . Any BTDT. I have some radios lying around but they probably won't trigger the antenna to rise as they are from 1984 to 1987. Then I could always re-install my busted antenna but that sometimes only picked up 1 station being busted.

Executive summary - 1. way to raise the mast with jumper wire.
2. No FM - any got-cha on antenna issues as it does have a circuit board.

Common sense ways it's the 21 year old radio vs new antenna.

Radios do get old, but I am surprised that you didn't just get a new mast.

Pull the radio out of the dash and check the antenna cable connection. Wiggle it around some, even unplug that cable and push it back in. Leave the radio on while doing this so you can check the stations.

Then take the trunk panel off 'again' and check the cable at the antenna. Look for chaffing of the cable in the trunk area.

Getting a newer radio from a 1997 probably won't help, except you then also get CD's. A code must come with it.

Keeping it running is better than buying new

Drove it 1 more time, FM radio came on after 10 minutes 850 1995

My old mast looked Ok when I took it apart (july 2015). I plan on keeping this 850 another 50 years , so good to 'stock up' on new parts. Went for the entire antenna.

Tasca never replied when I said I was having trouble with the FM band. I did get it through them. Good to learn they don't care.

I'll work it out in time. Perhaps get a new unit of some kind from Crutchfield. That perhaps can also be installed in my 83 B2 Audis, as I move plates from classis to classic. Volvo might be going off the road again soon to excercise one of my 5 others.
