Loose windshield S40-V40 2010

2010 S40 2.4i, AW-55 SN

Daughter had car at the carwash today and as the attendant was cleaning the interior, he commented that the windshield pushed out slightly at the top when wiping pressure was applied from the inside. Fortunately, no leaks... yet.

My guess is that the adhesive sealant has degraded somehow. Any ideas?

The car is under warranty, so I suggested to daughter that she take it to the Volvo dealer and don't delay too much.

Update

The Volvo dealer went about repairing the windshield and seal, which requires removal of the windshield. The windshield was the original Volvo factory glass and it had small pitting from a stone strike (but no crack) in the upper middle section. We didn't know the pitting was there until dealer pointed it out. The dealer warned that because of the pitting, the glass could crack when reinstalling.

Sure enough, the glass did crack and a quality aftermarket replacement windshield was purchased and installed.

It rained last night, no leaks around the windshield, so we'll chalk it up as repaired. No one had an explanation about why the windshield seal came undone after six years, other than "it happens sometimes."

On my 1998 V70, the seal along the upper edge of the glass was not put on thick enough at the factory leading to water leaking into the cabin eventually. I 'repaired' it by adding more sealant to the top edge of the glass, under the rubber outer edge. The windshield was not loose.

Bummer that the glass broke on such a new car.

Thanks for the background, might be worth trying sealant when limited to a small leak.

I think cracked glass is a known hazard among installers, I'm told that any pit or imperfection or colder temperature can cause a crack when windshield is stressed a bit.

Our windshield experiences may lend credence to the Monday or Friday car theory, although I have no idea what day the S40 was built. Probably a moot point by now anyway.

My daughter loves her Volvo, still!

Once in a while, a windshield can be damaged before sale.

Perhaps this is a replacement windshield that was not installed properly.

Time to see the dealer for sure.

Take it to the dealer ASAP. If you can in fact push it slightly forward, it becomes a safety issue and a leaky one at that.

Probably the only real fix is to replace the windshield, as the bonding is between the glass and the frame. Either a Monday or Friday car.
