intermittent shimmy V70-XC70 2004

Our '04 V70 has developed an intermittent shimmy. It feels a little like you are riding a motorcycle across an open deck bridge, but not quite as pronounced. The shimmy only occurs once in a while, for maybe 10 seconds, and usually at relatively low speed.

I have checked for the obvious things, loose front end parts, tires with broken belts, wobbly wheel bearings, etc. and didn't find anything. Any ideas ?

Thanks

Greg

Can you relate it to anything like turning, heavy acceleration, turning WHILE accelerating, etc.? It's kinda sounding like a CV joint in one of the front axles.

When I have been driving, it has been while going straight ahead.

A CV joint is about the only thing that comes to my mind that would be intermittent like that. An out-of-balance wheel will ALWAYS be out of balance.

Something that costs $0.00 to try is to swap tires front for rear, just for the heck of it. You never know if a tread might be separating and only acting up under certain conditions????

How are the CV boots? Still in tact or are they torn and slinging grease out?

The tires didn't appear to have any broken belts (surfaces were smooth), but rotating them to see if anything changes is a good idea. The CV boots were intact when I had a look under it for loose parts.
