Apparent valve ticking noise at startup S70 T5 S70 1998

My car has developed a tick when cold. It isn't as loud as some I have heard in videos online, but it is easily noticed in the cabin. Sounds like it is valve related.

After 5 minutes of driving, and return to idle and stopped, I can't hear it in the cabin.

A very quick search has yielded worn oil sump o-rings as one cause of a tick, but might the fact that the tick subsides after warmup indicate another cause?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the replies. As I say, the ticking goes away after the engine runs for several minutes. I don't know if injectors would quiet down or not.

I found two possible sources of ticking, the two mentioned by the first two replies. Klaus' suggestion, I believe, is consistent with the oil sump o-ring issue I saw reported elsewhere, in that some have said the lifters are initially starved of oil.

Here is a link that has comments about both.

The oil sump o-ring job sounds like a pain in the neck. I wanted to fix this before selling the car, but may sell as is.

Take a dowel and listen to the injectors and see if that is where the noise is coming from. The top end of our '04 V70 clatters quite a bit. I suspected lifters, but it was the injectors.

If it goes away after a few minutes, no harm. It is the lifters that drained and haven't gotten oil yet. Mine did that for a week and then suddenly stopped making the noise.

On our old Mazda MPV, it used to 'tick' for 10 minutes every day. It started at about 50K miles and still did it when I sold the car at 160K. That is before I discovered synthetic oil.
