Is the cigarette lighter (12 Volt plug) illuminated at night? S60 2002

Hello All,

I recently purchased a 2002 S60 T5. I just noticed the other night when I went to plug in the GPS cord, I could not find the cigarette lighter (12 Volt Plug), even with the plastic “12 Volt” plastic plug removed. On my 1996 850 GLT wagon, the cigarette lighter plug (it actually has cigarette lighter and ash tray, which the S60 T5 does not - I guess Volvo is trying to encourage a healthier lifestyle) does become illuminated (it even has a green collar around the socket) as soon as I turn on the headlights.

Did this socket on the S60 come from the factory without a bulb? Or has the original bulb burned out, and I have to figure out how to replace it? Thanks to all who reply.

Hugh

It has a 14V bulb which probably burned out. The dealer wants $10 for a replacement!!! If you ever find a replacement for cheap, let the rest of us know where to get a few. The shift indicator and ashtray lights are also the same weird shape and 14V.

Klaus,

Thank you for your reply. How do you access this bulb to replace it? With regard to finding less expensive bulbs, I am sometimes lucky by finding the same bulb from Radio Shack. Other times, if the bulb is “generic”, I’ll take it and see if I can match it up at a NAPA or Advance Auto store. For now I’ll bite the bullet, and get the bulb from the Volvo dealer. I will search to see if I can get the bulb from an alternative source. If I find that source, I will share that information with other members of Brickboard.

Fortunately, the car is a manual, so I don’t have to worry about bulbs burning out on the gear shift display. Also, unless there is an ashtray in the passenger section, this car doesn’t have an ash tray.

Separately, I posted an apology to you and James Sousa above in response to how I posted a previous inquiry regarding this same S60 but on different issues. I didn’t realize the way I posted the question could be viewed as offensive. That wasn’t my intent. I appreciate your help and that of James.

Hugh

Before you get all out of sorts, check the cigarette lighter for a plastic ring below the chrome rim. My car was green plastic and looked like this picture:

Sorry about the long URL. If your lighter does not have plastic trim, green or red, then it might not have a light. The lighter must be accessed from beneath to replace the bulb.

Klaus,

You are right. The absence of green or red plastic trim around the socket, indicates the absence of a bulb. I just got off the phone of my “Part’s Guy’ at my local Volvo dealership. My 2002 S60 T5 did not come equipped with a bulb to illuminate the “12 Volt” socket, either by the front passenger seats, or in the rear portion of the center console facing the passenger seats. I’m surprised. It is an inconvenience to try to find this socket at night without the aid of a bulb. I guess I should take solace in the fact the “bulb hasn’t burned out and doesn’t have to be replaced”. This absence of a bulb was also true on later models of the S60.

Thank you for the information above.

Hugh
