Buying xc70 guidance V70-XC70

Looking to buy my 6th Volvo wagon(3 240 2 v70)
Looking for another opinion on the xc70 years not to buy.
Recommended not to buy anything up to 2005? Because of bevel gears
Presently looking at 2006 108 k
Thanks in advance
Pete

Bevel gears do wear, Volvo seems to have strengthened the splines every year and the incidences of failure have diminished a lot. But, it all depends on the aggressiveness of the driver, especially when going from slippery spots to good pavement spots which puts a lot of stress on the drivetrain.

The bevel gear oil does need flushing, as does the Haldex system, at around every 50K miles or so. Volvo, unlike other car makers, does not have a scheduled maintenance program for either box. For longevity, I suggest you create one.

The same holds true for synthetic engine oil, where dealers cut costs by using regular oil.

Check that the Tbelt was changed at 105K mile service.

Haldex, the awd system used by most car companies. It is computer driven Vs the older Volvo cars that used viscous coupling to drive the rear wheels.

I was considering buying one. 2005-2007 are fine. Nothing wrong with 2004 that I know of. Were bevel gears a problem in that year too?

In addition to the bevel gears, the 2001-2002 can have tranny issues. Stay away from all Volvo's in those years with auto tranny and/or AWD.

I'd also consider the 2008+ models. The reliability is supposed to be good in the new body style. A friend has a 2011. No issues...

You should consider jwalkers advice on looking at a 2008 or later. The taller body is a lot easier to get in and out of.

Two years ago we got a fully loaded '08 with 78K for $16,500 at a Kia/Lincoln dealer.

Two years, and no expense except for oil changes - although it will need brake work at the next service.

We also have a new 2012 - NO costs so far.

Hello James,

I've found an '08 V70 with under 70k miles I hope to look at this weekend. It look absolutely new in the pictures. Have to say I didn't know it had an I6 which made me wary after all the 960 I6 issues years ago.

We're retiring our '95 855T soon.

Erwin
