Purchased a 2002 S60 T5 - Which should I buy: A Haynes or Chilton Manual? S60 2002

Hello All,

I just purchased a 2002 S60 T5 (5 speed manual) with a 130,000 from the original owner. My private garage checked it out and confirmed it had been well maintained. I’m looking to purchase a Haynes or Chilton Service Manual so I can make as many future repairs on my own as possible. Which publisher do you recommend? Also, do they still sell books or is everything on a DVD? I prefer a book. If books are available, where do you purchase them? Do you have to purchase sub category of the book for a T5 or is all the information you need in the basic “S60 Edition” of the service manual. Thanks to all who reply.

So far this car has been fun to drive. I hope it lasts for years. I appreciate all the responses I received to date.

Hugh

This may give you some insight...
http://www.amazon.com/Petrol-Diesel-Service-Repair-Manual/dp/1844259110/ref=dp_ob_title_bk
but it appears to be written for a RHD application.

I purcahsed a similar Haynes (RHD) for the S40 since that is all that was available. It's decent, but somewhat lacking in some details. I thought is was still a good reference even though my car (a North American LHD) was not covered.

Alschnerz,

I did contact the corporate office of Haynes and confirmed there is not an S60 manual for the U.S. market available. The only book they have is the one you referenced above, a book printed for the UK market. I have a similar Haynes Book for my two ’96 850 wagons. Yes, all the pictures and instructions are for RHD cars, but they are still helpful. I looked on Amazon and the S60 manual for RHD cars is available for less than what Haynes is selling it for. So I’ll probably pick up a copy and add it to my “Volvo Library” of books. Like most people on this website I tend to hold onto my Volvo for years (I’m about to hit the 20 year mark on my first Volvo soon) so I’m sure this purchase will be a wise investment. Thank you for your reply.

Hugh

Hi Hugh;
I thought the Haynes gave a good prospective of what was going on; even if they're RHD.

"I’m about to hit the 20 year mark on my first Volvo soon"
Hey, that's nothing. I'm going on 32 years for the 544 - and 48 (family) years if you want to include my Dad's 220.

Nice to see another Nutmeg-er. I'm only about 20 miles from you.

Alschnerz,

Thanks for your reply. You own a Volvo model I hope to purchase someday: PV 445/544 . Why Volvo has not brought out a “retro model” using the C30 or S40 platform escapes me. I think it would be as instantly popular as the BWM Mini, the VW Bettle and even the Fiat 500. Unfortunately, Volvo does not consult me on these decisions.

Hugh

If doing basic work, brakes, filters even a drive shaft, Haynes is fine, plus us, your helpers, on brickboard.

Milanomike,

You are right in your comments. The information I receive from you and others on this website has saved me time, money and aggravation. Also, “YouTube” is a wonderful resource to see videos on “How To” which goes far beyond the printed word and photographs.

To my knowledge, there are no more Volvo manuals. There might be a right hand drive version for the Brits. A VADIS DVD has everything, but those are pirated and take a while to get loaded onto a computer.

There is an online site that charges $25/year, but there are so many Volvo fixit sites that are willing to help, as well as youtube search.
