Should you really replace the serpentine belt at 105,000 miles? S60 2002

Hello All,

Just purchased a 2002 S60 T5 with 5 speed manual and 130K miles. According to owner’s manual and the maintenance book, you should change the serpentine belt at 105,000. That seems excessive. I have two ’96 850 wagons (5 speed manuals/non-turbo) and owner’s manual recommends replacing the serpentine belt at 60,000 miles. I know, a different car. I would like to hear people’s opinion: replace the belt at 60K or 105K. Thanks to all who respond.

Hugh

BTW I have read posts on this board where a broken serpentine belt can destroy the timing belt on 5 cylinder engines.

If you change the serpentine belt now, will you ever have to change it again?

Should you really replace the serpentine belt at 105,000 miles? S60 2002

JIm,

I will be “On the Side of the Angels” and will replace it. The car just over 130,000 miles. From my lips to God’s ears, I hope to put 200,000 on it. I have a ’96 850 GLT wagon (manual) with nearly 375,000 and another ’96 850 GLT wagon (manual) with 295,000. So I hope to repeat history.

Thank you for your response.

Hugh

Newer serpentine belts are made with EPDM, and do not crack or show signs of age like earlier belts.

They should be changed on schedule OR checked with a GAUGE --- almost no mechanics have a gauge!!!

See the Gates belt site for more information - the used to send out free gauges. There is also a smartphone app that can see a bad belt???

A worn belt can cause many issues.

Jim,

I have to ask you, what does “EPDM” mean? Thank you for your advice.

Hugh

EPDM = ethylene propylene diene monomer

See - http://www.gates.com/products/automotive/tools-and-sales-aids/belt-wear-diagnosis/neoprene-vs-epdm-belts - for a nice write-up by Gates belts

They state that the EPDM belts wear out like tread on a tire.

I found this information when I was looking to convert my '96 855R to a non-AC short belt configuration as I was not going to repair the AC on a 17 year-old car

A great 17 year old car non-the-less! - I still miss her.

EPDM has been used for premium level underhood soft parts (belts, hoses, gaskets) since the late 1960s. The application is nearly 50 years ongoing. Some economy hoses & belts (mfd in China, Korea, Mexico, Brazil) a few OEMs may still use Neoprene compounds, but most do not.

By the way, EPDM, vinyl, Neoprene, et. al., are classes or brand names of polymer compounds. There are different characteristics depending on the exact blend and manufacturing process.

To answer the original question, the same part (belt) in a different application (pulley radius, reverse bends) may have different lifespans and replacement recommendation.

Failure charts prove that age is still a huge factor. 5-6 years replacement of all cooling hoses and belts regardless of kilometers/mileage, unless the manufacturer states less, is a good rule to ensure unlikely failure. A 4 year schedule lowers it to nearly zero. Plastic coolant expansion tanks, tees, heater valves, and radiators should be replaced on 8-10 year intervals or sooner. Unfortunately, sudden coolant loss on a partial aluminum engine means almost certain cylinder head distortion and/or gasket damage.

If you are already doing a repair that involves removing coolant, belts or hoses on the early side of good replacement times, consider adding its cost to the job at hand and saving yourself from the second pass.

Jim,

Thank you for your response. I’ve printed the information from the Gates’ sight. It explains the difference between as to why I was required to replace the serpentine belt at 30K versus 60K - comparing my ’96 850 to my ’02 S60. Technology improved.

I would error on the side of too soon. Replace it before you want to be stranded by the side of the road on a snowy night...

I change the timing belt and the serpentine belt at about 70,000 miles on our '04 V70. I don't believe the stuff about the longer change interval. OE or aftermarket, the belts fit a lot of different cars. To think that they inproved the belt for this car is wishful thinking. Made it a little cheaper is more likely. Besides, the cost is peanuts if I put 4 belt sets over 300,000 miles versus 3.

Once it is out of warrenty, you are on your own.

It is common practice to replace the serp belt when the timing belt is changed. Yours should have been swapped at 105K, so you have a while yet.

This is not an 850 and the belt routing is different. There is no reason that the serp belt shouldn't last for 150K, given that the rollers last that long. Remember, there are no 'teeth' on this belt like on the timing belt so it should last longer.

The belts on the newer cars (newer than our 850's anyway) are designed to last longer. You can replace it earlier for peace of mind. AFAIK - If the serpentine belt breaks on your S60 at least it won't destroy your engine unlike the rubber timing belt breaking...
