04 V70 Timing Belt V70-XC70

I am going to do the timing belt on my 04 V70. Does anyone know if it has the spring loaded VVT cam. Do I have to worry abut that? I just did the belt on my 99 v70 and had no issues.

Did the timing belt today with no special tools. No problem.
I did mark the old belt and used the markings as a guide, Good thing because at initial set up one cam pulley was off by one tooth. easy to fix.

I just watched a video at IPD about the different holding tools they sell.

I am puzzled by what the tech says a :59sec.
He implys that the basic holding tool wont work with the variable valve timing.

    Why not?

I don't have a Volvo with the VVT or variable valve timing. Thought I read that you had to counter rotate engine to release spring pressure, don't quote me, I would think that info is here or on volvospeed or Matthews sites.

For marking the belt to the cam, I always use white out or even a dab of touch up paint to mark the existing belt to the cam and crank pulleys (and any others that you care about). Once the belt is off, transfer the marks to the new belt by counting teeth (several times), then slip new belt on to match marks on the sprockets. Sure fire way to get it right, first time, every time, worked beautifully on the 850, my Golf, etc. Wish I could say I thought of it on my own. Good luck. Mike

Once you get into the timing cover and have the marks lined up, take the time to make yourself a camshaft sprocket holder. I forget the size of stock that you need to start with, but it can be made out of 1/8" flat stock and bolts to the top of the head. Alternatively, count (and write down) the number of teeth on the belt between the timing marks.

If you don't separate the cam sprockets from the cams, you can disregard all of the VVT mumble-jumble. Note the car in this video has VVT on the intake cam but it is of no concern to the tech.
