Hi all,
I have had 740's and now have an 850T which I quite enjoy , however I am considering downsizing in physical terms and wonder about reliability,problems etc etc that may happen with a V40 , any thoughts or comments would be welcome,

I have a 2000 V40, and find it a very reliable car. In fact that series was found to be the most reliable volvo in Brit survey. I think one factor was its manufacture and design with Mitsubishi.
It is better in every performance than a 240/740 , faster, more economical (32mpg on hwy at 70mph) handles better and is quieter. Main downside is it has less cargo room, and is a bit harder to work on, but so far mine with 140000 miles has been very good.
Note one rust area behind the front wheels.

I suggest newer than 2003. IIRC there was a model upgrade in 2004, so get the newer version.
