2002 V70 (220K miles) possessed by demons? V70-XC70 2002

I have owned a 2002 V70 (wagon) with 220K miles for about 4 months now. I bought it from a retired school teacher who supposedly kept up with all the maintenance since she bought the car new. Everything is generally OK with the car, except a number of electrical issues. I have heard that Volvo has had some issues with its electrical systems in that time frame. Here is a sampling of what I have observed so far (at least one occurrence):

- Sunroof will not go back to it's closed state unless you intermittently press the open/close toggle switch and release it at some 'sweet spot'

- Driver's side window sometimes will not slide up or down

- Most of the times the trip meter will not reset properly

- On a couple of occasions the clock started randomly rolling up for about a 10 seconds or so

- Outside temperature reading occasionally seems to be off by 20 or so degrees

- Driver's seat position appears to change occasionally after car is left unattended

- Security lights start flashing some time after locking (and leaving) the car

- Check engine light recently came on, but no codes are stored

Just wondering if Volvo dealer can flash some software upgrades and correct any of these maladies. P.S.: Otherwise, the car runs fine.

Thanks,

Bernie

Time to read the codes with a Volvo code reader. Someone just bought a reader off Ebay that reads ALL of the codes, designed for Volvo and SAAB. It also resets the SRS light. Less than $150.

There are 2 possible problems: DIM and CEM. Both can fail, the first is usually loss of instrument cluster functions. The CEM is a central buss module that allows communication between all of the computers. Repairing either is a $500 cost at xemodex.com

So get the codes read, and don't let the dealer replace either of those modules as they will charge close to $1K for each.

Thanks Klaus! Had the clock endlessly rolling through the numbers again today. Not annoying enough yet to replace the DIM, but if I can pick one up cheap, I may think about it. I did order a new OBDII scanner (Autolink Autel AL519) from Amazon today - hope it can read the codes better than my old Innova unit.

      Greetings,

      Bernie

UPDATE 7-22-15: Got the Autel AL519 code reader a couple of days ago, and it wouldn't read the codes (returning it today). Took the V70 to Advanced Auto - they read P0032 (O2 sensor). The guy said I should be able to 'clean' the sensor rather than spend $100 on a new one. Any thoughts?

        Thanks,

        Bernie

At a minimum, it sounds like the DIM is going bad - a failure that is predestined for the P2 Volvos. But since you have so many seemingly random issues going on, it may be in your best interest to have a dealer or a well-equipped independent Volvo mechanic do a complete scan of the electronics before you start shelling out cash on repairs or replacement parts.
