"TAILGATE OPEN" WARNING LIGHT "ON" V70-XC70 1998

Today, my instrument cluster "TAILGATE OPEN" warning light illuminated, so I jumped out, opened, then firmly closed my tailgate. The light did not go out as it has in the past. Further, the tailgate courtesy light does not extinguish after the tailgate is securely shut.

Not having access to any wiring diagrams at the moment (I am on a road trip), I am assuming that there is a sensor in the tailgate which signals "closed" to extinguish the courtesy light and prevent the warning light from illuminating. Of course, I looked for such a sensor. My 78 and 88 wagons had a spring loaded switch which depresses when the tailgate is closed. I could find no such switch on my 98 V70. I wondered if it is a proximity switch embedded in the tailgate and the body.

And before anybody asks, I DID check the fuse list for a fuse which might be the culprit, but could not find one listed. Unless such a fuse were used ONLY for this function (unlikely) a failed fuse would take out other electrical features, but I have no other problems.

So, that brings us back to the invisible door switch.

Anybody have any ideas which I could try before I drop some big bucks at the dealership?

TIA,

It appears to be a common fault as I think you have dicovered. I had the same problem yesterday with the addition of not being able to activate the alarm. A quick phone call to the dealer, took the car in at 2.45pm, drove away with new lock assembly fitted at 3.45pm. No charge, but car still under warranty. It is worrying that so many faults in modern cars are not DIY mechanical corrections but part of mistifying expensive computerised systems.

Re: "TAILGATE OPEN" WARNING LIGHT "ON" V70-XC70 1998

I have the same car and on occasion have had the same annoyance. It seems to be worse in cold weather?? I ussually move the inside latch back and forth a few times and I think this helps. I should take it in to get fixed but I suspect it's past warranty. Does anyone out there know how long the warranty covers something like that (and the lock assemblies on the other doors too)?

Let me know Dave (if you dono't mind) if you get this fixed under warranty.

    Thanks,

    Paul

      Paul,

The embarassing truth is that the light no longer illuminates, so there is "currently" no problem to repair. Of course, I would never say anything like "the problem fixed itself"; but I would say, "if it ain't broke, you can't fix it." So, if it occurs again, I have some ideas on what to do.

I bought the car used from a dealer; it was a lease car in its previous life. I believe that existing warranties conveyed as well as some additional warranties from the dealer. I will have to do some homework to see what is still covered. I expect other Brickboarders will enlighten us as soon as they see your query.

I had the same problem and was able to "reset" the microswitch by pushing a flat object (ignition key would do) against it. To do it you have push the latch inside the housing to its locked position and then a little bit past that. The latch should touch the microwitch and reset it. I was able to do it several times until got annoyed and dealer replaced it under warranty (or was it a recall?).

    Hope it helps.

Mine was replaced under warranty, as were the two rear door power locks. Bad batch of parts/design.

No recall as far as I know. Typical Volvo.

But thanks for the idea. I'll try it the next time it fails.

There is a micro-switch within the latch assembly. Unfortunately, it is not serviceable seperately. You will have to replace the latch assy.

Check your tailgate wiringharness for open wires or shorts.

In the door lock there is a small switch ... You must just slightly push it with small screwdriver... I did it and is now fine for about a year...hope that it stays that way!
