Good/Bad Years for Volvo V70 Wagons... V70-XC70

I'm searching for a used Volvo Wagon (either a V70 or V50)...made between the years of 2000 and 2014...

Do you know which years are considered 'Good' and/or 'Bad' years for Volvos made between 2000 and 2014...mostly regarding essential parts like transmission, etc...

Thanks!!!

I have a 2004 V70 2.4T A/T, which has generally been excellent. Just some minor complaints - nothing expensive.

EXCEPT - the transmission fluid must be replaced by about 50,000 miles - and I don't believe Volvo recommends this as a service interval. My indie mechanic warned me about this, and I changed it immediately at about 55,000 miles. My tranny started exhibiting some very minor symptoms when slowing to a stop some time after that. My indie tells me that if the fluid isn't changed at around this time, you can count on a failure. Don't know how many years this applies to.

Not a 100% ringing endorsement, but I am very happy with it. My indie is happy I got the year that I did.

My earlier message is incorrect - I was referring to XC 70s

At some point, Volvo stopped sending V 70s to the US - In addition to our '08 XC 70 we purchased a base '12 FWD XC 70 and I was told that this is the substitute for the V 70.

Be careful evaluating the extras, or lack thereof, as this base car was almost 20K less than a loadedXC 70.

2008 is the earliest year for the current body.

At Cars.com, we found a nice, fully loaded one with 78k on it at a local Continental dealer - it had new brakes and tires - two years later, we have done nothing but routine maintenance - two oil changes and tire rotation.

I have had good luck with buying an off-brand car at a luxury dealer.

My wife's '02 has been finicky in the electrical department. Engine's been good though but little nagging things like door locks, driver's side master control door switches, turn signal sockets and steering turn signal column stalk (bad electrical contacts) and conked out alarm siren due to battery corrosion inside the unit (on same circuit as sun roof) have all gone wonky. Searched here and other boards and have found that these are not uncommon problems it seems. Neighbor has an '03 and she told me no such problems on hers at 200k miles so maybe Volvo went to better electrical connection parts in that timeframe?

Depends, are you looking for AWD or FWD? Ignore 2001-2002 Volvos.

If you want AWD, get newer than 2004. FWD, 2003+.

My question my have been answered already, if indirectly...

I'm looking at a 2003 XC70. I take it from your post that I should pass on it. Can you provide any specific concerns? I'm not in the market for another Volvo in particular but my 960 is about to cross the 300K threshold and it would be nice to have another beast like it...

Thank you.

KaiS

Nothing particularly 'wrong' with the 03 XC70. In 04, Volvo went to the more reliable Haldex AWD system, but Volvo dealers don't know how to service the Haldex box which can result in problems. Both Audi and MB suggest Haldex service at 40-50K miles. Volvo also has a problem with the transfer case, another 'life time' oil box that should be flushed every 50K miles, except that there is no drain plug...

Remember, the 03 is 13 years old. Vacuum lines get brittle, PCV systems get clogged, steering gear gets worn, and the shocks/struts only last about 120K. The Timing belt goes for about 105-120K, but then Volvo says to change them every 70K afterwards.
