Intermittent no start S70 1998

98 S70 non turbo. Intermittent no start. Engine cranks but does not fire.

When this happens three successive cranking sessions and the engine will usually start. When it does start, it runs fine.

A little info. This vehicle has close to 250,000 miles on the clock and has had regular routine service including fluid and filter changes.

Original fuel pump.

Could this be a failing fuel pump?

It is possible that the fuel is draining back into the tank. To verify, turn the key to "on" three times, waiting each time for the fuel pump to turn off - you should be able to hear it. The fourth turn of the key, try starting it as it should then start right up.

      Klaus, you are the greatest!

Your suggestion worked. So what part do I need to replace? The fuel pump or is there a separate check valve?

You could try a 240 check valve, I think that might work but not positive. Since about 1995 newer cars have the check valve builtin with the pump.

If you have the original pump and a few miles on her, you might want to spring for a new pump as it is easy to do on your car. Better than cutting a gas line and putting in a part that was made for a newer 240/740/940.
