Buying an S80 S80 2000

I've been looking into buying a 2000 S80 T6 with 90,000 miles. The timing belt has been done already and the vehicle has new brakes and tires. What else should I check on this car?

The electronics (DIM,CEM, etc) and the 5 speed automatic tranny. If it is a T6 engine, both turbos tend to die young and the heat of the turbos tends to bake engine compartment wiring.

What are DIM and CEM? And how do you check the turbos?

DIM = driver information module (instrument cluster)
CEM = central electronic module (buss connector for all computers)

Testing a turbo? Vibration, but that cannot really be detected without taking off the intake air lines and checking the spindle for lateral movement.

When the DIM fails, the speedo can go to zero and the other gauges may fail, and the engine goes into limp home mode. Sometimes it will leave you stranded.

When the CEM fails, all sorts of strange error messages will appear, seemingly unrelated. You will get tranny and engine errors and possible shutdown.

I would skip ANY Volvo made in 2000 and 2001, as they are all error prone and costly to repair. Don't forget about the electronic throttle module fiasco of 1999.

Klaus & David are right.......save yourself a lot of grief & $ by taking a pass on the S80.
Klaus is "spot on" also in recommending a pass on Volvos MY 2000-1.
My sister bought an 01 V70 after driving my 95 855T. Her V70 has had many issues including major tranny issues @ 60K . For some reason, she still loves it!

            No twin turbo.
            No 6 cylinders
            No 2001.

            We bought a 2005 2.5t and haven't regretted it.

Don't but it. Big money pit. Search "2000 Volvo S8o" on internet and read the sad stories. Twin turbo models are expensive to repair.
