rear seat belt stuck 850 1994

I just bought my 94 850 wagon and folded the rear seat down. The seatbelt tightened and now will not disengage, locking the seating in the down position. When I attempted to give the seat belt reverse slack to disnegage the locking mechanism it doesn't unlock. I looked at the cover and it has 4 plastic inserts holding the plastic cover on so I can't even get to the unit inside. Any tips? Thanks,

Re: rear seat belt stuck 850 1994

Remove the side seat bolster and unbolt the end of the belt from the floor. The bolster is removed by grabing the top and pull foreward, then lift it up and out. Once you get the belt end unbolted, the seat can be folded up, and the belt reel will release. I think you will find that the plastic button that is supposed to prevent the belt from retracting too far is missing. The good news is you DON'T have to buy a whole damn seatbelt to get the button! They are available! Yes, Volvo did something logical. To replace, simply push 1 half of the button through the strap, you should be able to fid the original hole, press the other half on, and heat a blunt tool with a propane torch to melt the protruding rivet closed. Glue does not work well. The biggest problem you might run into is convinceing the parts guy at the dealer to find them for you.

Bob, thanks for the quick reply. I'll give this a try and post the results.
