P-brake Adjustment C70 2000

OK - So while I have to give the dummies at the local dealership some credit for replacing the rear brake rotors for the 2nd time, I had to bring it back yet again to have the p-brake adjusted because we couldn't even pull it enough to get 1 click.

I asked a Sr. Tech. what the spec. was or at least how many "clicks" I should get. He didn't know a spec., but said 3-7 is normal. Now, after the adjustment I get just 2 clicks, but I've been tired of seeing them so I've waited a few months and haven't brought it back again - I seek your advice.

While I'm not observing brake drag, are my rear brakes in any danger of dragging or causing long-term ill effects with barely getting 2 "clicks?"

THANKS!

Mark <12,000 mi.

I'm guessing the p-brake on your car is adjusted the same as mine. If you really are bothered by how far you can pull the handle this is what your do. Lift up the armrest to access the storage area underneath. You'll see a small square access panel towards the front, pry that out with a screwdriver from the back. Now you'll see a big silver nut in a black bracket, this is the p-brake adjustment. I believe it is a torx 45 head. Crank that one way or the other until you like how the handle feels.

Thanks for that great advice. While I know an adjustment at the handle is not unique, is this mechanism unique?

Lastly, in theory, on a car w/ such low miles, what did this technician do to foul up the adjustment when he swapped out the rotors? I thought if they're careful, it should never be a major difference unless they p-brake was previously adjusted for wear.

I don't know if the mechanism is unique on our cars though I suppose it very well might be. My guess is the technician felt the p-brake was too loose and since he was working on the rear brakes anyway he decided to tighten it up some. This in conjunction with new rotors which weren't as well worn where the p-brake contacts them could easily account for the tight handle. Some people like it that tight i guess.

It can also be adjusted from the p-brake assembly in the back.

When one is changing rear brake rotors on the 850/_70, at times, the rear brake rotors cannot be removed because the p-brake is so extended it gets caught on the hub of the rotor. So what the mechanic has to do is loosen the parking brake shoe internal adjuster wheel shich sits behind the hub of the rotor. Afterwards, during reinstallation, they are supposed to tighten it up again.

Maybe this is where the p-brake is too tight?

    Re: P-brake Adjustment C70 2000

As long as there is no brake drag or friction, then you are not making contact. If you are not making contact with the brake off, then there will be no wear. As long as you can put the car in nuteral and move it freely with the brakes off, you should be just fine. If you hear any noise from the back brakes while doing this, then you have friction, just not much.

I just want to make sure that in theory there's no untoward tension which could have long-term implications.

I know, in theory, I'll end up getting more clicks as the pads/rotor wear.

      Thanks!

        Re: P-brake Adjustment C70 2000

Did you know that the p-brake is actually a drum&shoe system inside the rear rotor? Your new pads have nothing to do with the p-brake.

        Cheers.
