s2 solenoid fault code S80

2005 S80 T6 with 73k miles. Got a "transmission requires service" message on dash and the transmission went into "limp home mode", in 3rd gear only. Stopped and shut engine down. Restarted and no message showed. Car drove normal after the re-start. Computer stored a S2 fault code. Software issue? Trans flush? Or is it the big dollar fix? Any ideas or experience that is similar would be helpful. Thanks

Check the color of the fluid, pink is new, red is dirty, brown is filthy, and black is a dead tranny.

This is not a software issue, just all hardware. A flush is always a good thing, with 3309 ATF, BUT, do not take it to a shop with a machine that can overpressure the tranny and kill it. Flush it at home, it only takes 30-60 minutes, and about 10-12 quarts of fresh ATF.

Thanks Klaus,

Fluid looks pinkish. The code was related to fluid pressure and not electrical signal to the solenoid.
