Air Conditioning Issues V70-XC70 2000

2000 V70 SE n/a, Denso, AW-55, 214K

It's that time of year, where hot weather brings out AC performance issues.

Yesterday the temperature rose well above 90 degrees and while driving on freeway, the AC would shut off. I turned the switch off and after a few minutes it would start up again, then drop off again.

We're back in the cooler weather today, and the AC appears to be working OK again.

I know this is classic symptom of AC clutch gap wear. The car is on its second compressor.

I think I'll have the freon charge checked first and then if the symptoms persist, try fitting shim stock in the clutch face to close the gap.

Looking ahead for a more permanent repair, a Question: Can the clutch assembly be removed and replaced without disconnecting the hoses to the compressor? I recall reading on BB that the compressor can be dismounted and turned forward to get the clutch off, but I am not sure which models that applies.

The reason for the shims is the ease of the 'fix'. So much faster than making a puller to pop off the entire clutch, just to move the shims on the shaft. I have never seen a clutch assembly sold separately. At least the compressor doesn't have to be disconnected.

Go ahead and shim your clutch first, before it gets really hot again. This might even last 2-4 years, or even longer.

Thanks and I'll plan to shim first. Where are the sources for shim stock? Of course, don't need much, copper or aluminum thin sheet.

Tasca Parts shows a compressor clutch assembly for a little over $200.

I have used equal thickness plastic bread clips with success. I also had a 10X10 sheet of aluminum I bought at a hardware store for a different project. I just cut out a strip of aluminum, bent it double and glued it into place. Glue is key to both types of shims.

Pressing the clutch plate with one hand and the other hand held a pair of needle nose pliers with the 'shim' glued on both sides to slide the shim into place. It's not rocket science, you just want the clutch gap less than .020 inches so it will last a while.

I did have to raise the right side of the car a little to get better access, I don't remember if I took off the wheel so I probably didn't. Just the splash pan had to come down, which is a pain to get back on.
