2003 XC soft brake pedal V70-XC70

The car is a 2003 XC70 with 110,000 miles on it. When the car is cold and sat overnight, upon starting the car the brakes feel soft (spongy and depress futher than normal). After a short driving distance or increase in engine RPM's
the brake action seem more normal.

It seems like the vac. assist may be the place to start looking.
Any recommendation on chasing this issue down, are welcome.
Thx.

A spongy or sinking pedal is an indication of a tired master cylinder.

The normal test for the vacuum booster is to press down on the pedal while the engine it off. Apply a moderate amount of pedal pressure, like you were slowing for a stop. While holding down on the pedal, start the engine. Once the engine starts you should feel the pedal sink down a bit more even though you haven't increased your foot pressure. Note that your car has an auxiliary vacuum pump that maintains a vacuum on the brake booster for a couple minutes after the engine is shut off. So the test described above won't work very well unless the the engine has been shut off for a few minutes. Pump the pedal a couple times before you hold down on it in order to bleed off any residual vacuum. If you hear the pump buzz when you pump the pedal then you need to wait a couple more minutes to do the test.
