2004 xc70 possible purchase V70-XC70 2004

My wife`s `03 XC70 tranny is "heading south' with increasing shift flare tho` the fluid has been changed & B4 servo cover replaced. The transmission shifted much better for about 2 months but it was temporary. Last week we took it in to the dealer for a tranny software upgrade but were told that the car needs a new transmission.
A friend has an `04 XC70 with 180K for sale @ $3K. It needs some work; front end( tie rod ends) & bevel gear seals. The Tbelt/water pump was replaced @ 120K.
I haven`t driven the car yet as he`s out of town for two weeks but according to him, everything else is in good condition. Our plan is to drive this car(if we buy it!) for a year or so until we can afford a much newer Volvo.
Any advice/perspectives are, as always, welcome.
Rich

A bevel gear replacement is NOT fun or cheap, probably why the price is so reasonable. In order to replace the seal on the bevel the case has to be broken down and reassembled, probably other internal rebuilding will also be required, and the Volvo dealer does not do this work.

Just checked on the price of a transfer case from Southern Volvo. Can get an`04 with 152K for $400 US. They have an `05 with 138K, same price. Question: will the `05 fit an `04? I`m guessing "yes" but waiting for a response from the experts.
Of course, there is shipping from Tenn. to MT.
My friend was upfront about the car needing approx $3000 worth of work. I`m concerned about stuff that he`s not aware of.
      Thanks,
      Rich

There are 2 things that can go wrong: The output shaft in the bevel gear/transfer case gets loose and is not repairable, and/or, the front CV joint destroys itself. I would 'assume' both problems. Colorado driveshaft will supply a front CV joint for less than $200, it is 'easy' to replace.

A used bevel gear from an 05 should work nicely. The oil should be replaced, of course, before installation. A 'good' mechanic should be able to replace it in a few hours, the right front drive shaft may need to come off.

The problem is diagnosing the current bevel gear. The front CV joint must come off the shaft to expose the output shaft of the bevel gear so you can check for play. Also, one should check the oil level in the bevel gear box. the oil should be at the bottom of the fill hole (similar to a manual transmission).
