V 50 tailgate won't open

So, while removing and replacing my shifter blind, the tailgate stopped working. Don't know if I hit something on the remote, but the tailgate will not open. Pressing the electronic release on the tailgate results in a buzz or whine that suggests there is electricity in the tailgate, but the release does not release and the tailgate does not open. Any ideas?

    You have ME perplexed! Have you tried pushing/pulling on the hatch while you press the unlock button? Something may have fallen in a gotten jammed.


    I confused your dash lack of valet with the S40, sorry.

    You probably pushed the valet button by accident. Check your owner's manual.

      Alas, if I hit a valet button I don't know how. My lousy user manual does not have "valet" in the index. The locking and unlocking sections don't mention one. Nor does my old S40 Haynes service manual. The trunk/boot button on the remote does not do anything when I hit it. Sorry to be so slow. Any other ideas?

        There is a row of buttons on the center console. Your owner's manual should explain what these buttons are for. I would tell you that the middle button is for Valet, but that changes from year to year and other options.

        At least the key will work in the liftgate.

          Actually, there is no keyhole in my tailgate. I pulled the rubber cover off the switch in the handle and it seems to work fine. It makes a sound when I push it, and then there is an echo of sorts inside the tailgate that sounds like whatever moved with the first activation moved back. But the tailgate will not open during any part of that cycle.

          I don't mean to be difficult but there are no valet buttons on my center console. I've paged through the 6 or 8 options on the screen that set the approach and home safe lights and others. Again, nothing appears to be related to valet or the tailgate.

          For the record, nothing happens when I hit the "trunk" button on either of my two keys.
