Hello All, Just picked up an S70GLT with 200k on it the car seems relatively solid considering the mileage. Seems to have a top end leak as I can smell oil burning off the manifold. First run with this model. I dont see where it would have any valve cover gaskets. Any Thoughts?

Perhaps drips were dropped on the last oil fill.

I have been away for awhile b4 I could run the s70 again. Not a drip but a small puddle. Finally got to take it for a real drive at speed, right front is pulling severely to the right and feeling like it has a flat spot in the tire although they look fine. CV joints maybe? I have ordered the shop manual but not sure if this includes diagnosis for these problems.

With a lot of oil, I would suspect that the exhaust cam on the driver's side is leaking at the cam seal. Easy enough to diagnose and easy to pull off the cam position sensor and check for oil behind it. There are youtube videos that show how to replace the seal.

Pulling to the right? If the axle boot is still good, check the bushings. Control arm bushings also.

Flat spot on the tire can happen if it is cold and has been sitting for a while with the pressure down to about 25psi. You could swap the right rear and front tires while you examine the suspension components.

Thanks for the reply, I think the car has several issues going on. Pulled the oil dipstick and smoke coming out. Clogged pcv system? From what I have found on the boards this would lead to the seals leaking oil. Just don't know where to start. Pcv system firat then seals or do everything at once including the timing belt?

Three different items. The timing belt might be the most important?

You have a turbo, so doing the PCV includes cleaning out the PTC nipple on the intake before the turbo. I would always do the PCV before attacking the seals, but the rear exhaust cam seal is right where the vacuum line goes to the PTC and the intake.

Thanks, I plan on tackling the pcv system this weekend. I don't think I will have to remove the intake manifold twice to effect the other repairs although I am not certain. As this is not a daily driver I am in no big rush unless the brick goes down. Would seem to me if I have to tear down the front of the engine to replace the front seals I might as well include the timing belt at this point.

ONLY replace the front cam seals if they are leaking. That is a hard task as the cams need to be locked from the rear.

Correct, the intake manifold does not need to come off to do the T belt or cam seals.

Ok, couldn't get any bolts to budge. Soaking every day in pblaster. Must be the rear seals as leaking from the drivers side. Have to get some new tools in the arsenal to reach the bottom bolts on the intake manifold.

Thoughts?

The bolts should not be hard to remove. Access is tough for the bottom bolt, far left as you look at the engine. I had a couple of extensions and a swivel, remember, don't remove the bolt, just back it out a few turns. And don't forget the 2 12mm bolts for the bracket and the dipstick.

Thanks all for the replies. After quotes from the local Volvo guys I have decided to do myself. The required tools are one hours labor for these guys. Just a matter of time for me. Pcv first then I will attack the cam seals
Anyone have a radio schematic for this guy? The 2 I down loaded don't match.

Just bought an old 240 for $ 200.00 bucks today!! Wife is gonna kill me!!

Hey, cleaning the PCV might stop the seal(s) from leaking..:) You'll need to remove the timing belt cover to look at the front cam seals. Normally it is the rear camshaft seal where the cam sensor lives that is the culprit. I've never read here of anyone that had the front ones leak.

What kind of radio? There are 3 different types that came stock. What's wrong with the radio?

A 240 for $200, even if it doesn't run is worth $500. Sounds like fun! Most insurance companies will cover the 'new' car for 30 days without applying for new insurance.

Radio issue resolved someone had put the fuse for it in the unused socket. My bad never overlook the obvious. Yes I have the 240 and it runs. pretty beat up. but for the money probably better than what I paid for the S70.
Starting to think the s70 has an rms leak as the real seals are clean. Oh Well.

Sounds like it could be a rear camshaft seal leaking. Mine was leaking last year until I replaced the cam sensor and resealed it. Clean your engine to see if you can id the source. Now I have a minor rear engine leak closer to the front of the car. I'm waiting for warmer weather and more time before I investigate further. Winter doesn't want to give up here in New England!

Can't help with the intake removal. Keeping soaking it with PB and make sure you have the right tool so you can get the necessary leverage on the bolts.

Your car has a light pressure turbo, so check the oil line at the turbo and see if the $15 seal is leaking. It is hard to spot, but the leak usually drips onto the exhaust pipe and smokes. Because it only leaks when the engine is running, there shouldn't be any oil on the ground.

Correct, there is no head gasket. But check the seals for the cams on the driver's side, the exhaust cam seal is most prone to leaks and will show up as a slight drip down to the top of the block and then flow back toward the firewall before dripping on to the exhaust/ground.

Cam seals are easy to replace on the driver's side. But if you do that, check for excessive crankcase pressure.

Thanks all for the replies, As mentioned I am New to this model. As a matter of fact I didnt even no I was buying a turbo. Definite oil leak hitting the manifold then quite large deposit of oil on the ground. Camshaft seals maybe? Need further investigation to pinpoint.

As mentioned, it could very well be a clogged PCV system. As I suggested on the RWD forum, drive the car for 10-15 minutes and with it still idling pull the dipstick and check for excessive smoking out of the pipe. That indicates that the PCV system needs work.

Other possibilities (slim) are a leaky engine cap seal, a leaking distributor shaft seal, a leaking camshaft seal. All of which can leak on a hot engine and create a burning smell. Good news is that is not likely a rear main leak which normally leaks out of the bottom of the engine.

Also make sure that nothing is in contact with the exhaust manifold or cat.

I bet you are smelling PCV fumes from a clogged system.
