Relay type whirl sound left front corner of engine compartment XC90 2008

Recently hear an intermittent but more often then not a whirling noise in the front left corner of the engine compartment. It is in or under the intake area and throttle body (assume that is the throttle body area). Have yet to pinpoint the source. At this point only pulled the black plastic cover over the inlet/throttle body. The computer module on top of the throttle body seems intact and not the source of the noise. Any thoughts, comments, or advice would be appreciated. It would be nice to have manuals on these rigs. Always bought the factory manuals with I bought a new car. I guess that all went out the window with AllData.

Does it make that noise for a couple minutes after you shut the engine off, or does the engine and the noise stop at the same time?

Noise stop immediately if engine is shut down. Noise is only present if engine is running. Can hear it at idle and at speed. Intensity, level, ETC does not seem to change whether at idle or speed.

I don't know how your engine is configured, but the 'older' cars have the idle air control motor in that area. The IAC is on if the key is in posII. Noise from the IAC is common for the 850/70 cars and not a bother as far as engine performance goes.

I believe on most all of the newer ones the idle is controlled by the throttle module itself. At least both our 2.4NA and 2.5T are.

"...Intensity, level, ETC does not seem to change whether at idle or speed...."

I'm trying to think of something that remains constant regardless of engine speed. The only thing that comes to mind is the cooling fan. It's kind of noisy in my wife's S80.

Paper manuals are no more. But pirated copies of VIDA exist:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Volvo-2014-VIDA-Vadis-SERVICE-REPAIR-MANUAL-PARTS-CATALOG-WIRING-DIAGRAMS-/191492983531?fits=Make%3AVolvo|Model%3AXC90&hash=item2c95df0aeb&vxp=mtr

Buyer beware, and the disk is supposed to contain every car Volvo ever made.

As to the noise? No clue. Relays only make clicks, not whirls. And computer boards only generate heat. You need a stick stethoscope.

Thanks Klaus; Yes using the term relay was probably a poor choice of words. The sound is probably a rotating sound or possible a flow type noise like through a nozzle or something. Do have the stethoscope, just need to put the time in to pin point source. Thought others might have experienced same symptom and could point me to the source. Guess not.

Klaus
Was aware of the CDs but always found it hard to figure out if CD was valid or as you say a poor pirate job. Am I correct to assume that the EBay link you provided is a useable and valid CD?
