Finally got my 850 running (an Unsolved Mysteries type update) 850 1993

After several months (and way too many threads on here getting help, of which I'm very grateful), my 93 850 is running again.

2 weekends ago, I finally got 95% of it back together but I wanted to wait until my friend was able to help. Two heads better than one, etc.

So finally this last Sunday, we got it running. If you remember I was off a tad on my timing. Some said it was OK, the local Volvo dealer said if it was him, he'd re-do it. I decided to re-do it again, but oddly enough, this time the tensioner slid right into place without any struggle. Almost made me think I was doing it wrong.

And the spacer slid into place super easy too. And now my timing marks are 100% accurate. Woo!

Once we started it, it initially was showing the same symptoms as before. Cylinder #1 wasn't firing (unplug the fuel injector wire or spark plug, and it made no difference). But after a few minutes something must've cleared up because it started to work fine. In fact, it ran better than it did when I bought it.

Because my car had expired in December, I have to get a trip permit first, but this Friday (I have the day off) I should be able to get it and drive it. Finally, I'll get to stop driving my dads old Cadillac (which is falling apart).

If you take anything from my posts (other than "this guy is a blathering fool") it should be this.

When you are doing your timing, be sure that all 3 marks are lined up! (thanks Captain Obvious, you're a gem!).

You should open up the captain obvious volvo 850 garage. That was alot of work. Good job. I still don't dare do my timing.

If it continues to make an issue, I will. I'll eventually replace it anyways.

        Btw, re: Captain Obvious

I was talking to a friend of mine about it. I think someone should make a TV show where they show what actually happens when you don't fix something the right way. As in, "I made the mistake, here's what happens. Learn from it". Instead of just show the top end repairs that most shade tree mechanics can't afford to do.

I thought it would be cool to do that with older Volvos (repair them on a TV show, showing how some repairs are done that all Volvo owners know, and sell them).

The problem is, I don't know how much of a market there would be for that unique of a thing. Although it would be nice to have a visual representation for car owners who aren't super knowledgeable and can (and do) get taken by shops.

I know there are youtube vids that do this (Robert DIY for one). But having a bigger budget and more time than what is allowed on youtube would be nice.

Just gotta win me the lottery...

Go with a web based program. Some of us are not watching TV, you will have a wider audience, and it will be cheaper to produce. I have a few contributions...

my friend Dylan and I have a few videos we've done of us (well, mostly him since I didn't want to be on camera) working on his Amazon and his 544.
