Considering a 2002 S60 S60

Hello fellow Bricksters,

As an owner and maintainer of numerous 240's, 740's 850's and a V40, I am seeking wisdom regarding a 2002 S60. This car has 170K on it, I am told by the owner that it has been maintained well and is in beautiful condition. I am planning a trip to take a look at it. The drawback is the transmission. It has a problem that involves the 3rd gear...unsure whether it is not going in to 3rd or just erratic. I am not against installing another transmission if I could be sure that there aren't going to be more tranny problems due to the year or design of the transmission. He is asking $1500 to $2000 for the car. It is hard for me to turn down a nice volvo for that price unless it will be continual problems. Any wisdom for me?

Thanks Klaus! I will be going to look at the car Thursday and review the service records. I will consider this in my decision making.

      Thanks again!!

Unless there is hard documentation regarding maintenance, never believe what is told to you. The car is due for a new timing belt/tensioner. Check for newer struts, and other front end steering components that should have been replaced by now. If it hasn't been treated to synthetic oil, be prepared to service the PCV.

The tranny is a 5 speed and there have been numerous problems with the 2001-2002 versions. The major reason I tell folks to avoid these two model years. Volvo didn't get the programming correct until 2003 and later. And finding a junk yard version is a crap shoot.
The fix could be as simple as replacing the "B" servo gasket which IPD has, or a very expensive rebuild.

If you're not averse to changing the trans Erie Vovo will sell you a used trans with a lifetime warranty. Nobody fixes these transmissions. They're all rebuilds including any you would get at the dealer.
