My fuel pump will prime for what seems like a long time. Around 8 seconds. Is this normals??

My 97 850 was having pump prime issues as well. It wasn't running for a long time, it just was long to crank once the pump stopped. I later found the small section of rubber hose that connects the fuel pump to the pump housing to be loose and leaking. This wont take much to check. Just gain access to your pump in the trunk, remove the pump and check the hose/clamp for security. I will try to add a picture.

Does the 850 have a vacuum pump that may be buzzing at "ignition ON", rather than the fuel pump?

Yes it does but that's not the priming sound I'm hearing. The pump used to only run for a few seconds which is why I was concerned. I'm not sure if the cold is messing with it or as Klause said the pump may be slowly dieing.

Hook up a fuel pressure gauge to the injector rail and watch how fast (or how slow) it climbs when you turn the key on.

Check the fuel pressure regulator. When was the last time you change the gas filter???

the filter I just put in a few weeks ago. I don't know much about the fuel pressure regulator.

If the engine starts normally - not letting the pump prime, but turning the key from pos 0 to pos III - then it is not terrible.

It is possible that the backflow preventer is not closing completely and you are loosing some of the fuel in the fuel line. Or, that the pump is no longer as strong as it once was.

It does seem to start right up after a split second delay. Thanks for the info.
