Our XC90 seems to be stuttering at speeds above about 50 mph and when it is "working harder," for example on a slight upgrade. If I floor the accelerator, the transmission kicks down as normal and the car speeds up as normal. It is more during gentle acceleration. I tried higher-octane gas, but that didn't help. Temperatures are very low right now (between 15 above and about 10 below zero F. Any thoughts?

Besides the plugs, how about running a good fuel injector cleaner and cleaning the throttle body. When was the last time you replace the gas filter, do a fuel pressure test. Fuel pressure regulators can caused some strange problems.

How long since it had a new set of plugs ?

Our daughters AWD Subaru has a low speed shudder when it is cold and it is something binding up in the rear differential.
