Looking at 1999 V70 XC V70-XC70

All,

I have been presented with the opportunity to purchase a 1999 V70 XC. I just heard about this car from a friend of mine - it's her mother's car, and because the mother is getting up in years they've decided it's time to move on.

The mother isn't the original owner but she purchased it as a former demo in 2000 when it only had 10k miles on it. She's had it since and I believe it has all of 98k miles now, but she hasn't driven it much recently. All service has been at the local dealer.

Though I have owned many Volvos this would be my first AWD car, and an early one to boot. Do you have any advice and/or tips about the XC that I should know about, particularly if I do buy it? Thanks.

1999 introduced the electronic throttle and coil-over spark plugs. The original ETM, which is attached to the front of the intake manifold, had a white label. These were known to fail. The up graded yellow label were more reliable and no Volvo should be running with a white label.

Dealers will not remove the ETM and clean the throttle body, that is a DIY job. They will also not flush the ATF, you will need to do that. They also do not flush the bevel gear box, you will need to do that.

You can get a list of all maintenance done at that dealer, just ask for it.
