V50 vs V70 T5 high milage -- which is better? (manual transmission)

So I've decided that my 2006 toyota corolla is simply too scary to drive in new england; it doesn't have ABS or stability control, and I really don't want to get in a serious accident with it (not that I want to get in an accident regardless)...

I've been watching craigslist for a while and it seems like manual transmission V70 and V50 cars come up occasionally.

How do they compare (V70 vs V50)? All the cars I see on craigslist are all somewhat high-milage older cars (150k / 2000-2005 and up). I've been in a couple of V70s that haven't been particularly well taken care of yet they still seem nearly new inside and other than some suspension issues seem to drive pretty well also.

I'm not worried about doing regular maintenance, and don't mind if the car asks me for a thousand dollars every once in a while.

I put maybe 5-6k miles per year on my cars.

Is the AWD system on the V50 similar to the 2nd generation V70s?

Thoughts?

Thanks for any suggestions!

2004 and newer all have Haldex AWD systems, much more reliable than prior years. The V50 is a bit tighter under the hood and slightly smaller.

If you can find a T5 with a manual tranny, grab it!! That is a rare combination for the USA, 300bhp and a clutch. BTW, a clutch should last for 200K+ miles. A worn clutch will need the pedal pushed almost to the floor to engage a gear.

Maintenance history is key. A seller stating that he changes oil every 3K miles is not to be trusted without paperwork to prove it. I change the oil annually, synthetic only and drive my 854 less than 5K/year.

The V50 and the V70 use the same sort of AWD system?

In my ideal world I'd get a V50 for myself and a V70 for my wife; FWD V70 auto and AWD V50 6spd...

So other than looking for gunk in the oil fill cap, and ideally getting a giant stack of receipts for prior oil changes with good quality oil, what should I look for?

V70s are getting harder to find, the XC70 are just as reliable plus sit a little higher than the V70. Unless someone ordered one and picked it up in Sweden, the V/XC70 will be automatic. Look for a 5 cylinder version, 2006-7 for a good price.

The smaller V50 is fun, but small. A manual will be hard to find, and turbo not needed to have a little fun.

The turning radius is terrible in the V/XC70 and parking is not fun. But the TRAKS system is absolutely perfect, never spin out.

        Never even consider 2001-2002 Volvos.
