Cell phone install? S80 1999

I got a Nokia hands-free kit installed in my S80, but the Nokia install people wanted to route the antenna through a pillar, near the side window impact airbags, and the Volvo dealer said that's a bad idea.

So now I have the antenna neatly tucked inside the car, invisible, but the reception stinks, and is worse than holding the phone.

The Volvo guy said that he could route the wire for me under the carpet and then up the rear pillar, outside the actual rear pillar covering/molding and it would take around 2-3 hours to do it, at $65/hour.

What are other people doing for cell phones? Any suggestions for me?

I was also thinking that maybe they could put it under the rear seat, which seems to have a lot of spare room (try lifting it - it gives), and it not near a lot of metal so maybe the reception would be better there?

Re: Cell phone install? S80 1999

I have an internal dual-band antenna attached to the inside upper right hand corner of the windscreen (900/1800 MHz, manufacturer CoJot, there are others, too). A thin cable runs inside the A-pillar without problems. Excellent reception. My previous car had an outdoor antenna placed on an optimal site on the roof, but I couldnīt tell any difference in reception quality.

    Regards,

    Hannu

Give it up. It is a car, not a telephone booth. Your life will be richer if you don't have to communicate all the time. The rest of us will be safer when we share your road.

If your comfortable with removing your interior you migt try routing it as per the dealers suggestions. If not Just take it to someone who is and won't charge you as much per hour (Nokia people?) and have them do it. Stereo installers such as tweeter, boomer mclouds, etc. are also a goo place to have something like this done as they are used to pulling apart interiors on all sorts of cars and they will be responsible if anything goes wrong like breaking a panel or something.

I have the factory kit and it is awesome. I would recomment you re-route the antenna according to your dealers suggestion

Is that the Volvo factory kit, or the Nokia, that you are talking about? What is included in the kit? Antenna? Anything else?

I thought the S80 was pre-wired for a cell phone?

And when I see you use your portable, I'll be the one honking and waving. By the way, if the wave looks funny, it's not because I've lost some fingers.
