Request for Diagnosis-- Steering Column Flutter and More 850 '96

About 9 months ago I noticed a change in the way bumps, particularly those in quick successsion were being communicated thru the steering column. I've been feeling a metal on metal knock through the column in situations where I go over rough patches of road (in Washington DC -- that means nearly all the time). At my 35K service I asked the dealer to look into it-- they said all the steering and front end linkages were fine. Well, now I'm up to a 40K service and the problem is still there. Moreover, I experience an intermittent steering wheel flutter during highway driving. I had the tires rebalanced, but no joy. At times it almost feels as if the drive shaft is out of balance or alignment. I'm thinking that these two phenomenon are linked -- the metal on metal feel in the steering column and the intermitten hi-speed flutter. Any suggestions fellow bricksters?

Re: -- Steering Column looseness and More 850 '94

I have a similar problem. When I hit bumps in succession i feel a thump through the wheel, It feels as if something in the steering system is loose. I know that there is some play in my rack, but my dealer assures me that this is not significant and would not cause such loose feeling. I have replcaed the ball joints, the inner and outer tie rods and the roll bar links, and the bushings and nothing is solving the problem. It seems to be worse when under braking. My dealer says the car is fine and can find no serious cause of the problem, yet it exists. Any Ideas Brickersters?

    Thanks in advance

    Andrew P

PS the car is a '94 850 with 140000Km on it.

I REALLY wish i could help, i am experiecing the same flutter in my steering wheel, i had the tires balanced again and again, and the front end checked out, but the vibration is still there, i have new struts and springs and i am going to order new strut bearing mounts on the top, i hope one of these will fix mine, have you tried to look under your dash with a flashlight at all to see if any part of the column could be hitting something? i wonder if its possible that its suspension related, but out towars the firewall? well i would love for you to keep me posted, i need some help as well,Jamie
