Luggage Racks V70-XC70 2001

I know there were many messages on the board last year - but didn't need a luggage rack so didn't pay attention. What are your recommendations on purchasing an aftermarket car-top carrier (I have the basic Sears, large plastic box carrier) - Brand, model number, etc.. Its for a new 2001 V70.

Thanks,

Glenn

I'm quite happy with my Yakima Rocket box (white lid to match my white car). I only wish these guys could come out with a quicker way to mount it. I take mine on and off by myself. Takes about ten minutes once you have it all set up.

One advantage of the Yakima over the Thule (which Volvo sells with their name on it) is that the Rocket Box has a belly between the bars. You can carry one tall item in that area, where the Thule box is flat all across the bottom, thus wasting a bit more room between the box and the roof of the car.

my $0.03 (I hate selling myself short)

Thanks, but....I already have a Sears box (used on my 89 740) and was hoping to use it again with a different rack. Can the Yakima handle that or do you have to use their carrier box?

Ah, I was very confused. When you said you wanted a "car-top carrier" I thought you were in the market for a new box. What you want are the load bars. Get the factory ones, as they mount without contacted the exposed painted surface of the car, and do not have to grab the top of the door. Retail price for these bars is under $150, and they are VERY well designed. The cross-bar spread is about 31" if I remember correctly, and that cannot be changed. Your other choice is to add the roof rails, but then you're looking at WAY more money. The load bars like I have can be removed at any time, for a totally clean roof. Take just a few seconds to install/remove. Here's a shot of my car with the bars and my box.

            Darell,

Thanks for the pic (I was able to get to your website). That makes a lot of sense - I'll head down to check out the load bars - I like the easy on, easy off because they won't stay on except for trips.

There's nothing better, as far as I'm concerned. If you were to buy Yakima's version, it would set you back over $200, and the clips would go into the door, and the thing would sit on your paint.

I've actually just modified a set of the factory load bars to use Yakima round bars. Wasn't as easy as I thought, but it's possible. The factory bars work well, look great and are the cheapest racks you'll ever buy for any car. It just doesn't get any better than that!
