Bulb Out in Climate Control 850 1995

Half of the ECC panel on my wifes '95 855T is dark telling me that I have a bulb(s) burned out. I pulled out my trusty Haynes manual and it indicated that if you pull off the control knobs there would be some screws that hold the panel face plate in place. From there it looked like and easy fix. When I pulled the knobs off I could not see any screws. Are these bulbs easily accessable or do I have to go through the whold exercise of taking the dash apart ?

TIA

JFarns,

I checked the Volvo shop manual last night, for ECC, as Prospero mentioned, you have to pop the ECC module out from the radio opening. There are 3 bulbs inside the panel.

Re: Bulb Out in Climate Control 850 1995

JFarns,

I have 95 855 also, and I also had the bulb out situation in my MCC panel. The passenger side of the panel was dark. According to the Volvo Part manual, I don't think there are screws behind the knobs. My MCC does has 2 screws behind the knobs. For ECC, I believe that you need to push the ECC module out from the back of the module. I can double check the Volvo shop manual and respond back to you tomorrow.

If that is the case, then you have to take out the radio and push the ECC module out from the radio opening. Once the module is out, there must be screws to secure the panel around the module. You can then replace the bulb inside. The bulb that I replaced in my MCC panel can only be found in dealer, no where else!!

Re: Bulb Out in Climate Control 850 1997

P>I'm not sure for '95, but for my '97 the dealer said they have to remove the dash cover to replace the blubs for the climate control (just one burnt out, but they replaced all they can get hold of). You can check out the Bay 13, scroll to "850 Dash Removal from Bay 13".

Re: Bulb Out in Climate Control 850 1997

I have gone through this on my 854 T-5. Basically the easiest way for me was to pop out the stereo. With the stereo out you now have access to the ECC from the bottom and rear. (Since you have the type with no screws behind the knobs, the unit is held in with locating pins and clips.) Reach your hands into the stereo hole and grab the ECC by the bottom and rear. With constant and firm pressure, pull the unit out of the dash. Remove the 3 connectors from the rear and your'e free. Once out, there are several screws holding the case together. Remove the case and then you will have access to the bulbs. I suggest replacing all 3 at the same time so the display is uniform in brightness. The bulbs were normal plug in type, there was no socket to replace. I don't recall the Volvo part number, but it took a few tries since the bulbs are not the same in the type with the screw on face.

Good luck.

Prospero
