Car slips while in park, forward or backwards S70 1998

My S70 T5 auto just started a worrying symptom. Intermittently, when I pull the car out of the garage, and put it into park and shut it off, it slips when I take my foot of the brake. It gives a "click, click, click" sound as it is moving with the lever in park. This has happened in both directions, depending on grade. Transmission works fine when driving.

I should mention that it is possible that sometime in the past several months, I put the lever in reverse briefly while the car was moving forward. I seem to recall something like this.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance. Haven't been around these parts in awhile.
Don

You broke it??? The parking pawl is a pin that engages and keeps the car from rolling. The clicking is the pawl not completely engaging, which could be a function of the cable not going far enough or the tip of the pawl broke off. IIRC this is not repairable, I hope someone else can tell me otherwise.

In the meantime, adjust the parking brakes and pretend you have a clutch.

Well, now I'm not so sure. As I get older, there is a lot that falls into the I'm not so sure category...

I haven't had this symptom since I posted this message, and I drive the car every other day. But what I failed to mention is that the shift lever release sticks when it hasn't been used (car hasn't been driven) for some time. When I remove my fingers, it sometimes doesn't return all the way to its normal position (flush with the bottom of the shift lever). When this happens, I can't remove the key. On the events in question, I didn't try to remove the key because I got out to close the garage door. I am wondering if this is what happened, and since the car was on a slope, it was more prone to roll.

I left the car for a winter once, when that lever first acted up. I looked into trying to remove and lubricate it 5 years ago, but forgot about it because it started working better and was a PITA to get off.

Spray some lube, I prefer silicone, under and around the shift button. That might help it move faster and allow the tranny to shift fully into park.

Removing the shifter is a pain, there are some helpful hints over at Volvospeed, but that is a last resort for me.

I'll give that a try Klaus - thanks.

Yeah, I was following that procedure way back when, and when the going got tough and it started working better, I gave up. Then my brain went dead, and now my car is driving itself! Getting old.

OK, I assume this is in the transmission, and when you say "not repairable" a new transmission?

This is encouraging.

I have a '98 V70 that does the same thing. I'm guessing the previous owner broke it as I always use the park brake to help take the stress off of the trans. That being said I only paid $800 for this car and have been driving for around 3 years with the parking paw broken. I just watch how/where I park it so it doesn't roll.
