Inner Circlip preventing axle from going in transmission. V70-XC70 2007

I can't get the half axle to go all the way back in the trans. When I took the circlip off, it does go in. Now the circlip is stretched and there is no way the axle will go in all the way with it back on. Do I leave it off, get a new clip from the dealer or buy a new/rebuilt axle?

I'm not sure the dealer will have a circlip. Was there one on the original axle? Back in the 850 days, only the driver's side had a circlip.

The Dealer has a clip for about $15, This is the original axle that I am trying to put back on. It is the driver's side. A Rebuilt is only about $80.

My thinking is that I might spread out the new one trying to put it on. Would it just be easier to buy the rebuilt with the clip already on?

For $15, the dealership should put the clip on the axle for you!

Unless there is a torn boot and the axle has to be replaced, I would only get re-manned axles. The cheap stuff is in fact cheap and does not last as long or fit as well.

        EDIT:
The circlip slides on from the tranny side, not over the sides of the axle. Just expand it enough to clear the end and then slide it down to the groove where it will click into place.

I unspread the circlip and put it on over the end. However when I insert the axle it goes in until the circlip reaches the spline in the transmission. I tried the back out and slam and the tapping on the other end techniques. Any suggestions for something else to try?

I got it! On a Toyota website someone said to position the circlip with the opening facing down and held in place with a little grease. And it worked with a little slide hammer action from the play in the joint.

Nice example of lateral thinking. I would not have suspected the orientation of the circlip would have mattered.

          I agree about the dealer!

Yes, I think you are right about how to put it on. It would be widened less to slip it on from the end since the diameter of the shaft is only a slightly larger than that of the groove.

So maybe I will get a new one. But maybe I will first I take off the one that that I have and squeeze it down, then try it your way.
