Intermittent no start V70-XC70 1999

I have a 1999 Volvo XC70 with 230,000 miles. Quite often I will get in the car to start it, place key in ignition and turn to crank. It will start and then stall almost immediately. Repeat procedure, stalls again. Repeat procedure, stalls again. Try to crank again and no start at all. Wait usually 5 maybe 10 minutes and bingo, she finally starts. Been going on for awhile, sometimes good for a long time, sometimes acts up nearly every other time. Doesn't matter if engine is warm or first thing in morning cold. Obviously intermittent. Wondering if it is the chip in the key. Anyone have any thoughts or experience please.

Starter motor brushes come to mind.

The chip in your key should be fine - no moving parts. But the security ring that surrounds the lock tumbler might be cracked, and temperature changes will cause the ring to contract and loose contact.

The security ring is easy to replace and costs much less than a key from the dealer. No programming is required.
