es anyone know what will trigger the "ENGINE SYSTEM SERVICE REQUIRED' message? V70-XC70 2004

2004 V70 235kmi. I am getting the engine system service required message displaying on the dash. It comes and goes, but comes and stays on longer recently. Does anyone know for certain what issues can cause this message to display? It seems the cruise control does not function while this message is displayed which is becoming problematic. I checked for codes but none ever get stored that I can find. The car has high miles, and the original clutch. I don't want to put a whole bunch of money into the car(no trips to the dealer are going to happen) as when the clutch starts slipping I already decided to pass this car to someone who wants to replace the clutch themselves, or send it to the great beyond. If you know for sure what issues cause this service message, please post them! Thanks!

You could stop by an autoparts store and get it scanned for free. Some will give you a scanner to take out to the parking lot yourself.

I assume this is not the normal oil change service message.

Thanks Klaus. I have been to the auto parts store twice and used their reader with no luck, meaning no codes. I do not get any codes on my reader either. It is not the oil change service message. It reads "ENIGINE SYSTEM SERVICE REQUIRED". It comes and goes, but comes more often now. I just cleaned the throttle body, and used a Volvo gasket on reinstall, and the message still came back.
I can sometimes get the message to clear by turning the ignition on and off a few times. I have even done this while driving, because I believe this message causes the cruise to be disabled at times(cruise indicator light wont come on and cruise doesn't work), so being a manual shift car I can turn it off and on without hitting the starter while driving. Then message clears and cruise works.

Thanks a lot Volvo! A general catch all message from any of the computers which may not show up on generic scanners.

A search had problems popping up everywhere including a MAF, throttle position switch, O2 sensors, air leaks into intake manifold, you name it. And no codes! It could even be the CCM or DIM at fault.

A really good scanner that shows Volvo codes 'might' point you in the right direction. I would have a Volvo shop scan the car, print all of the errors, and attempt to reset the codes. I would not have them start throwing parts at it unless they were willing to put the old part back on and credit your bill when the message comes back - that will never happen :>)
