The Continental tires on my 2000 XC were worn out and had to be replaced in 20,000 miles. My dealer said that this was quite common and that Volvo and/or Continental was considering providing a refund or credit for inappropriate tread wear at this mileage.

Is anyone aware if either Volvo or Continental has provide XC owners a refund or credit for faulty Continental tires?

The Contis on my new 1998 XC went about 45K with a little tread left -- maybe 5K. Mileage was about 1/2 city - 1/2 half highway. Rotated/balanced every 5K and aligned annually. Wear seemed fairly even. I liked them and replaced with same. Still pleased.

I have a 1999 XC. My Tire warranty is a separate sheet of paper in the owner's manual wallet.

I am just about to get new tires (40 K miles) and am going to try to get some credit. Altough I have a degree in Engineering, I am having trouble understanding how the tire warranty works. The way I believe it works is this:

You get a credit towards a new continental tire for the percentage of treadwear (usable tread left / original tread depth) x price of tire, if the tire becomes unservicable during the first five years.

This credit can only be obtained through authorized continental tire dealers toward the purhchase of a new continental tire. I called the 800 number and found out that Volvo dealers are not authorized continental tire dealers.

There are of course things that are not covered, for example improper wheel alignment. I believe that your tires are wearing out due to improper wheel alignment. Did your tires wear out on the outside but not the inside? I have also heard that Volvo claims they cannot adjust the camber to fix this problem.

Do you do a lot of city driving? I have a V70 XC 1999 and my Continental were shot at 20K miles.

I don't know about any credit, but I have 61,000 miles on my 98 XC, with about 45K of that on the Continentals, and about 15K on my winter tires. The Continentals still have lots of tread left. I would check your alignment and look for other reasons for the rapid tread wear before assuming that all 4 tires were faulty.

Amazing how many miles you all get out of your tyres.

My '99 XC has now 76000 kms. lets say some 50.000 miles and I'm on my 4th pair of tyres. I had the Michelin MMX 15000 kms. Pirelli p-7000 20000 kms,

Goodyear Eagles 30000 kms and again choose the Goodyears because they are not much worse than the Pirelli and Michelin, especially bearing in mind that they are much cheaper and last twice as long.

Still I don't get too much miles out of tyres generally.

I had the alignement checked 2 times in between.

So you check your tire pressure REGULARLY?

Just to compare, I sold my '98 V70 R w/ 23,500 miles on the clock, my tires were the MXMs, they had LOTS of tread left...But I do check my tire pressure WEEKLY.
