OBD II Code P0410 850 1996

'96 850 wagon, 350k miles, 5 spd. transmission.

Just when my dashboard had been cleared of all unusual warning lights, my CEL came on last week after a somewhat rough start. Code read P0410. I cleared it, and the car drove fine. Yesterday, the same thing happened - the car wouldn't crank on the first try, then started right up, and illuminated CEL (P0410). Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Bernie

A P0410 is a SAS failure code. The secondary air injection system is supposed to supply air to the exhaust manifold while the engine is cold, it helps burn some of the rich startup mixture.

If you are not in California, then Volvospeed has a procedure to eliminate the SAS from your car.

It is probably a purge valve that failed, the air pump located below and forward of the battery, or the purge soleniod.

I deleted mine or a 1996 850.

It's all coming back now! I soldered in that diode in the ECU module about 6-8 months ago to get rid of that code. 'Must've not done a good soldering job, or the diode burned out.

Thanks!

Checking the diode is easy enough, but you also need a working solenoid and fan relay (with the blower unplugged).
