97 850 Engine Swap 850 1997

After sitting for some years, with its replacement also sitting in the garage, I am about to embark on swapping the engine in our 97 855. Haynes would have me do this "conventional" style, with a hoist, from above. However a few people have told me I'll have a much easier time of it just dropping the whole subframe, drive package and all, and pulling it out from underneath. This will be the first time I've pulled a white block. Suggestions? I know to get it out from underneath means lots of height, but that's not an issue.

I've been thinking if I do it from below I'll pull the halfshafts and leave the struts a-danglin', if that's an option.

Leaving the engine on the subframe and dropping engine/tranny/axles and lifting the car is an option.

You do know that the hood raises to 90 degrees... I wonder why the factory did that...

Seems to be the consensus, and that's how I'm proceeding. Wow there's a lot to disconnect. I still haven't figured out exactly what happens with the harness. I know it unplugs from the bottom of the ECU box, but it still looks like tons of stuff needs to be disconnected. I'm about halfway through "prep". I imagine once everything is disconnected it takes about ten minutes to get the bloody lump outta there!

I know about the hood, but we took it off anyway. Much better light this way.

I did my swap from above as that was the only available option. Its is fairly straight forward. I left the harness in the car and let it rest on the core support/ subframe. I had my radiator out for easier access & to avoid damage. I left the a/c compressor hooked up and let it lay as well so I did't have to dis/re-charge the 134a from it. The biggest hangup I had was the ABS module and the transmission wanting to bind together on lift-out. A "load leveler" on whatever lifting system you are using will help there. Its a two person job to make sure stuff is all clear and not damaging anything, but it is easy as long as you take you time. ( at least I wanted a second set of eyes, your choice!) All that said, I had the whole powerplant out of the vehicle in less than 1/2 hour.
