Power antenna mast problem 850 93

My antenna mast has been acting up for some time now. I read the Bay 13 section on replacement and recent posts on cleaning. I took out the mast, cleaned and oiled it and reinstalled. No change. It goes up most of the way and then makes a grinding noise. It won't retract with out a little push to get it started. The gears on the mast looked ok. Do the gears on the motor below wear out? Any suggestions?

TIA,

Larry

    Larry,

It is a mistake to oil the mast, you want a clean, dry mast. The owners manual suggests cleaning with WD40 (which is not a lubricant). Try removing all oil, which may be a problem if in the gears and see if it improves...

Tony, in my experience, a mast lubricated with Triflow (a silicon lubricant) worked for over two years without a hitch. After the 20K mile service performed by Volvo dealer I got the clean dry mast you speak of. The clean dry mast seized the same week I picked up the car from the dealership. I took the mast out, lubricated it with Triflow, worked it well to get rid of the kinks and once it operated smoothly, replaced it back into the motor assembly. It's been over a month now of flawless operation. Just my personal experience.

The antenna part might be bend or binding on itself. I had the same problem last year. I got a new antenna from the stealer and all is fine. Actually, I just whiped off the gunk deposited on the metal mast this morning.
