Interior lights flash when using turn signal S40-V40 2000

I am just wondering if it is normal for my interior lights to dim when the turn signal flashes on and off. When my turn signal light turns on, the interior lights dim. THe interior lights then return to their normal intensity when the flasher is off. I tried explaining this to my dealer, and they changedd the turn signal relay, but it still occurring. So if it is normal, then I will just live it with and not worry about it.

Thanks all!

Does this occur while moving and the engine speed is up or at

idle, car stopped? Stopped at idle, you are probably running

off the battery (especially at night or using DRLs). Maybe a

larger battery that can supply more current would help.

This is normal for the S/V-40. The turn signal load causes the dash lights to flicker slightly. There is no fix.

You have got to be kidding, right?? A $33,000 plus car and the electrical system cannot handle a turn signal load??? I understand that Volvo cut a few corners and added more plastic-fantastic to get the price down where "everyone" can afford it; but that is outrageous!!!!

What happened to quality?? Sorry for the rant.

Re: Interior lights flash when using turn signal S40-V40 2000

I believe an S40 is a $23,000 car and it seems that the electrical system IS handling the turn signals fine. I do not see a report of failure in the original post. Maybe the mode of operation is not what is expected by the poster, but there is no failure. The turn signals blink, the dash lights illuminate the dash, etc. So the lights dim a little under the load, I do not see it even as a mild irritant. I've seen this before on other cars. I don't see what the big deal is. I am not even sure if my S70 does this, because if it did I would assume it was normal as long as everything was functioning properly. I usually spend most of my time behind the wheel looking at the road anyway. I don't think this is "outrageous!!!!", sorry.

On second thought, my lights dim when the air pump kicks in about 15 seconds after a cold start - maybe I should sue Volvo for that. Naaah, I'll just enjoy my car and life instead of nitpicking.

What is even more outrageous is that the same thing will happen in an S-80

        Ford happened.

I think Ford happened because of quality. Volvos quality has been a mess for years. Even though my 96 GLT has been mostly trouble free. The dashboard lights burning out every couple of years is not right. How can a company have a problem with light bulbs for as long as Volvo has ?

Though I could be wrong, to my knowledge, Volvo doesn't make light bulbs. If their supplier can't make decent equipment then I agree that Volvo should find someone else but that doesn't mean they should take the blame. Do you blame your contractor every time a bulb burns out in your house? Near as I can tell Volvo's have been running for decades and with so many still running with over 100,000 (my 98 S70 included) and 6 with over 1,000,000 I don't think one can point a finger at Volvo for a lack of quality. While I have nothing against ford they have a nasty tendancy to die rather quickly in my experience

Actually I don't think the light bulbs are the problem. I think it is either the bulb sockets or spikes in the electrical system. The bad thing is that Volvo has had this problem for about eight years now . Would you blame a contractor if he built your house out of cardboard and eveytime the wind blew your walls fell down ? Even though the contractor didn't manufacture the cardboard. Cars are expected to last well over 100,000 miles now days. Even lowly American cars can easily surpass 100,000 miles. I have two Chevy trucks . They both have original engines and transmissions ,one has 167,000 miles and the other has 125,000 miles. Both are four wheel drive. Both have fully functional light bulbs.

Don't know why the lights are blowing (this isn't a problem in the older volvos) But it is common even in the older volvos for the dash lights to dim when the turn signals are used (I have had this occur in 120, 140 series, and 240s, I don't really see it in the 740) So I wouldn't worry about that causing problems in the long term. Spikes or sockets sound like a good possibilty for the blown bulbs (since volvo introduced a new socket for the turn signals I'd say that is the most likely suspect).

Toyota seems to manage to screen component vendors and work with them so they don't put junky parts, including light bulbs, in their cars.

Yes. It's Folvo's responsibility. If they can't manage this, they should recruit people who can.
