Auto Trans fluid level- How do I check it? S40-V40

2001 S40-
So, I wanted to check the trans fluid level while the car is running (this is the manner in which I check it on my XC70: Hot engine, running). There is no way to get to the dipstick due to hoses in the way. Shall I just check it when the engine is OFF and I remove hoses? Any other methods to check for correct fluid level?

In our '96 855R, I used a hook made from a thick coat hangar to pull the stick and a LONG screwdriver to seat it the final half-inch or so.

No, you are supposed to check it when the engine is running at normal temperature and in park or neutral.
So, yes, you have to wear long sleeves to prevent burning yourself.

There is no reason to remove hoses. You should be able to push them aside.
And, yes, it is ridiculous that you have to do that to check the fluid level.
