Third Brake Light Anomaly 850 97

Hello

My burnt bulb light began to flash on and off, as it has before, when a light is beginning to fail. Eventually the indicator light stayed on solid when I applied the brakes. No problem, I bought a bulb and replaced the failed bulb. Then the same thing happened. But, the bulb was not burnt out? I have removed and replaced the cover and bulb housing numerous times. The problem will go away and return. The bulb does not work when

the indicator light is on. And I have changed the bulb again. No luck.

Also, when the car is in park and I apply the brakes I hear a clicking noise from under the shift console. This only happens when I park and shifting to any other gear. Any sollutions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kirk

Re: Third Brake Light Anomaly 850 97

Sorry can't help you on your mysterious bulb behaviour--hope you figure it out eventually. The second thing you were concerned about: the clicking noise when you apply the brakes--seems normal because I have that as well on my '95 850 turbo. The auto shift lever button will not budge without your foot on the brakes. Because of this design, the brakes act as the mechanism to disengage the button and allows you to shift out of park. That noise or click you hear is probably just a by-product of the mechanism engaging and disengaging. I've been hearing that noise for quite a number of years now and have not had any problems because of it--rest easy now.

Re: Third Brake Light Anomaly 850 97

Is ypur car a sedan? If so, remove third light cover. Under the lamp assembly you will see a plastic locking tad. Push the yab and slide the light assembly out of the mounting bracket. You will see two metal contact strips on the lamp housing and the mounting bracket. Sand the contact strips and then bend them out to get better contact. reassemble the light. You should have no more problems. Seen this problem many times.

Re: Third Brake Light Anomaly S70 98

Will this fix work on an S70 as well? I have been having the same problem with flashing indicator light on the dash but all my bulbs are good.

Re: Third Brake Light Anomaly S70 98

Hello Ian,

This is my second 850 and each failed bulb began the same way. Burnt bulb indicator would flash on and off until the bulb actually always failed. Then the burnt bulb light stayed lit solidly when attempting to use the bulb that failed. I have not had many bulbs fail but, I noticed the burnt bulb indicator reacted this way each time. ie a gradual and then complete bulb failure. Sorry, you did not mention that you had replaced the bulb and the same thing happened. But, it seems the third brake light replacement procedure would not have changed much. Check out the instructions Bob listed for the third brake light replacement.

Re: Third Brake Light Anomaly 850 93

I think that somewhere your wiring harness has a short ,either in the bulb housing or in your connectors thats why theres no power to it.

and on the otherhand that clicking noise is your solinoid which is like a shift release lever on your shifter but instead it uses your brake to release the shifter as well
