Need Some Specs - About to Purchase

hey guys, quick question

I'm in the market for a volvo sportswagon. Not sure which years were what.

I need

- manual transmission

- AWD

- turbocharged engine

I assume that some 95-98 850 GLT's meet that specification? How about for the V70s? I've read that the 2001 V70R is AWD/turbo, but no manual tranny?

Also, for the V70, only the R is AWD right? the T5's are all otherwise FWD?

also, does anyone know of a good turbine upgrade for the 2.3L? I come from a turbo/AWD background (current car is a turbo DSM(eclipse) that tends to eat mustangs for lunch). I'm looking at the volvos because I'm trying to build a 350-400hp daily driver that no one would look twice at.

thanks guys

    Dave,

A local dealer here has a 1997 V70 AWD for $28950CAD. The car has 104000KM. Silver, 5-speed, no alloys. I drive a 1998 of the same car. There were no automatic 97's available in Canada to my knowledge. Both auto and manual 98's were available. Emissions problems dictated that only auto was available for 99+. I understand that you can buy a light pressure turbo car and install the head from a 2000 V70RAWD on it for an excellent increase in performance. Good luck

Re: Need Some Specs - About to Purchase

    Hi there,

not sure how much help this will be but if you want AWD, you pretty much have to get a V70R for what you are looking for (AWD, HPT) (I think there was one year of 850 AWD but I don't think they came with manual trans). Also you don't mention where you live but if you are in the U.S., manual trans are very hard to find (manual trans were not available for all years) (They are more common in Canada but still very rare). Your best bet is probably to find a 2000 V70R (2001 is the new body style - only T5 or XC, no AWD R) but as mentioned, I'm not sure how common they are with a manual trans.

Getting 350-400HP from the Volvo may not be realistic either, the 2000 Rs came with 261 and with a chip + exhaust you might be able to get to 300HP but I thinks that's about it (port&polish and larger throttle body, etc will get you some more but I don't know how much you can expect and that's going to get real pricey). I also don't know if the trans and driveline would be able to handle 350-400 anyway.

Realistically, if you want a wagon with that much power, I think you will have to look for a European or Australian (not available in NorthAmerica) Audi RS4 Avant. They're not cheap (probably about $100,000US) but they are very powerful, Quattro (AWD), 6speed and it's a wagon.

    Hope this helps,

    Mike

In the US, you will not find a manual AWD V70 because they never made it in this country. I know that, in Canada, they had V70 AWDs (LPT) w/ manual but I am not sure that they had V70 Rs w/ the manual tranny.
