Gas mileage and thinking about an 850 850 93

Hello all,

I am thinking about buying a 93 850 with about 120,000 miles. What shoudl I watch out for? What kind of gas mileage can I expect from this vehicle? I have driven rear wheel drive volvos for five years and like them will I be happy about the performance?

Thanks

Peter

Preformance is fine but if you are coming out of a 9 or 7 series turbo you better get a least a low pressure turbo in an 850. I don't know what climate you live in but the front wheel drive is alot nicer in snow. The higher output 850's have some torque steer when you hammer down on them. I have a 97-T5 i get around 28 on the highway but that is driving at 75-80mph and 120-130 kph

    Check the A/C

we have had our 93-850 for 4 months now. Last week we took it on a trip, into the snow country ( for cross country skiing). I do not know how many times my wife asked " do you know how fast youre going". I hear it on the dryland freeways too, great cars. I have had volvos for the past 25 years. Anything from tricked out 122's to my iwfes 850. Maybe I am getting old but this one is one of my favorites . Maybe being non turbo we do not get the mpg other 850 turbo owners are claiming, and I do not know the reason for that, but we are happy with the power. I have had 2 volvo turbos, a benz turbo and a renault turbo. everyone an expensive car to fix when broken ,I'll pass on a turbos. thankyou, but then agian I am strange, I even liked SU's, big valves, a mild cam. an IPD header with free flow and fat 14 inch meats.

I have had my 850 for just over a year now, I had a 91 740turbo before that. That is the only two cars I have ever owned. My next car purchase will probably be an older Volvo. I am A young guy only been driving for 8 years. I Like the Volvos and I like what I had heard about them. All my buddies drive souped trucks, Volkwagons, Acuras, hondas, and Mustangs. Of course mostly on the outside not to many engine Mods in this bunch. I guess my tastes are older then I am, But what do they know I haven't let them drive this car. They don't know what there missing. Do you get better or worse gas milage.

Re: Gas mileage and thinking about an 850 850 93

My 94 turbo wagon gets me anywhere from 15-19 city...but it is all short distance, stop and go. Highway nets me around 27-29 depending on how hard I drive. As far as how it handles? It is beyond doubt one of the funnest cars I have ever driven and everyone who has driven it says the same thing! Can't go wrong with it! However, if you have been driving rear wheel drives, you will notice a harder ride in the front wheel, but the handling and snow driving are very good with the front wheel!

    I get 27 +/- around town. Haven't done a trip that hasn't involved steep hills yet..then I get 29 (at 70 +mph.

Check the records, as previously suggested.

Also, while it is a small thing, determine if the pollen filter has been retrofited (cost to do it youself is $32 from Borton Volvo (on line).

Check Kellys and Edmunds for prices.

I bought mine w/160k on it. Drives FINE!

    Good Luck

    Tom

I have a 93 850glt. Very reasonable gas mileage. be sure and check service records though. This will make the difference in a good buy and one to let go.
