Gravely sound upon acceleration V70-XC70 2007

Dad left us his 2007 V 70. His cream puff has 98,000 miles on it and has always been serviced regularly. I asked my guru at the independent Volvo spa to diagnose the gravely sound at low speed acceleration. He said it was nothing. The car has new brakes, new tires, computer alignment and new tie rods or whatever Volvo calls them. The antiskid light sensor will remain unrepaired. The car has an overdrive transmission. What could the sound be? It is a light grinding sound at low speed. It is not effected by turning right or left. I would like to keep the car for the next 50,000 miles. I am not eager to go beyond that as with my 93 940, my 07 T5 AWD.

It is hard to diagnose noises over the internet. The anti-skid warning can be an issue, but it may be relatively easy to diagnose and only moderately expensive to repair. If the light is on, you should have 'normal' brakes. If it goes off you can have all kinds of issues.

An '07 V70 should not be making light grinding noises at low speed. Gravelly noises are usually bad bearings. A competent mechanic should be able to identify the source of the noise. What does your Volvo Guru say is causing the noise ? It is hard to believe that nothing is making gravelly noises.

Maybe try another mechanic or even perhaps the dealer, someone who can explain what you are hearing. Saying 'It's nothing' sounds a bit like the Guru is either blowing you off or not taking you seriously. IMHO.

Did your Dad have the water pump, timing and serpentine belts, idlers, and tensioners replaced yet ?

    Greg

      Greg,

A recent check engine light and transmission stumbling forced me to limp the car to the independent garage. The solenoid was replaced and that seems to keep the car in the correct gear - making for smoother up and downshifting. There is reciprocity in the transmission again.

It also seems to have eliminated the gravelly sound as well as the axle clunk/ping.

Of course right now we are driving the car in winter. Axle clunk is best heard after a long swim at the lake and you pull out of the park with A/C shut off and the windows down, and then you get to hear the axle clunk in all its full glory.

The anti-skid light ? If the ABS is not functioning correctly, it could be causing a brake to engage while you give it gas. You mechanic should have checked the error code for the ABS and at least given you a solution.

    This is NOT normal.

Klaus, I will go back to the guru and ask him to check again. The word on the anti skid light was that it was a defective sensor and that the low end fix was to put some black electric tape over the light. I have removed the tape and just clear the message when it says Antiskid something or other.

A bad wheel sensor will really mess up the brakes. Find out which one is the problem and fix it, usually a wiring problem or someone banged it hard and it nolonger points where it should.

It kinda sounds like pre-ignition (PING). Any chance you got bad gas at the last fill-up? Has the gas been sitting in it for a long time? If the tank is low it might be that filling it with minimum 93 octane will help.

The reason for this cars purchase was that it runs on regular gas. And the regular gas we have been getting is always from the same station. I do appreciate having an alternative operational theory though. Maybe the line that it runs on regular gas was just that.
